An ahnentafel, German for “ancestor table,” numerically lists a person’s direct ancestors. The root person is #1, parents are #2 and #3, grandparents are #4-7, marching up the tree in a fixed father-mother pattern. All male ancestors are even, female ancestors are odd.
For the geeks: If you convert the ancestor number from decimal to binary and drop the leading 1, you can derive the ancestor’s relationship to the root by reading the following 0’s as father and 1’s as mother. For example: 9 = 1001 in binary. (1)-0-0-1 reads father-father-mother. So ancestor #9, Elodie Marthe Lafleur, is my father’s father’s mother.
